The bighorn sheep. Bighorn sheep (Ovis Canadensis) inhabit The Rocky Mountains from Canada to New Mexico. Bighorn males, called rams, are famous for their large, curled horns. Ram's horns can weigh up to 30 pounds, more than all their other bones combined. The horns are a status symbol as well as a weapon used in territorial battles. Fighting for dominance, males collide head to head at speeds up to 20 mph. The ram's thick, bony skull usually prevents serious injury. Females, called ewes, also have horns, but they are much smaller. The sheep themselves can weigh 150-300 pounds. Bighorns are usually around 3 feet tall and live 6 to 12 years.
