The Mule Deer: Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus) are found throughout the western half of North America. They get their name from their large, mule-like ears. Male mule deer are called bucks, females are called does, and young of both sexes are called fawns. The mule deer is the largest of the Odocoileus genus, standing on average 40 inches at the shoulders. An adult buck can weigh 300 pounds, with does averaging 150 pounds. Instead of running, mule deer move with a bounding leap, called a stotting, with all four feet coming down together. Average life expectancy is from 8 to 12 years.
